This Week in Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 23–25: Jazz Nights, Preseason Hockey and an Arena Country Show
The window we are looking at runs from Wednesday, September 23 through Monday, October 5, but the calendar is front-loaded: nearly everything on it lands between Wednesday and Friday night. Here are six nights we would plan around, in date order.
Woodlands Productions + A Tribe For Jazz present: Nate Smith at Woodlands Tavern
The week opens with a jazz booking at Woodlands Tavern, co-presented by A Tribe For Jazz. It is a Wednesday with an early listed start, so this is one you can catch after work and still be home at a reasonable hour. Jazz on a weeknight is not something every week offers, which is why we put it first.
PRESEASON – CBJ V. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Hockey is back at Nationwide Arena on Thursday, with CBJ hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins in a preseason game. Preseason nights are looser than the real thing, which is part of the appeal: nothing in the standings is on the line. No price was listed when we checked, so look at the event page before you go.
Jammy Buffet
Over on Summit Street, Rumba Cafe has a rock show the same night. At under twenty dollars it is the cheapest ticket in this roundup, and a good excuse to get out on a weeknight. If hockey is not your thing, this is our Thursday alternative.
Ella Langley: The Dandelion Tour
Friday's biggest room belongs to country. The Dandelion Tour stops at the Schottenstein Center, and an arena show means traffic and parking take longer than you expect. Leave early, and check the event page for prices, since none were listed.
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe w/ Levi Brown and The Smokin’ Section at Woodlands Tavern
Woodlands Tavern closes its week the way it opened it, with jazz. Levi Brown and The Smokin’ Section are on the bill too, so there is a reason to show up at the listed time rather than drifting in late. It is the priciest ticket here, and the one we would pick for a Friday that is about the band rather than the bar.
Two Door Cinema Club w/ STRFKR
The alternative pick for Friday is at KEMBA Live! on Neil Avenue, with STRFKR also on the bill. Two bands on one ticket makes this a full evening, and the 6:30 listed start is the latest of our three Friday picks. No price was listed, so check before you commit.
That is six out of more than two dozen events on our calendar for these three days alone. The full events listing on the site has the rest, with times and ticket links, and it stays more current than any roundup can. If we skipped the one you are going to, tell us.
